May 1st is International Workers’ Day, a day of global solidarity for the working class. This year, May 1st is observed in a very difficult and undesirable situation, amidst an atmosphere full of war and militarism, which has harmed every aspect of the workers and the low-income people of the world.
In this context, the working class, as always, has paid the heavy price of wars. This is in addition to the fact that workers have faced austerity policies, cuts in public services, unemployment, hunger, poverty, and the insecurity of wars, an atmosphere of militarism, as well as fascism that has gripped the society.
Imperialist powers are in a fierce and dangerous conflict to re-divide spheres of influence, control raw resources, monopolise labour and commodity markets, and achieve profits. As the war in Ukraine continues, another major war is taking place in Iran that has encompassed the entire Middle East.
The United States and Israel, without considering international laws and standards, have ignited this latest war, killing thousands of civilians in Iran. They have destroyed dozens of industrial centres where hundreds of workers have lost their lives or been injured and disabled. They have demolished many schools and civil and public places and made the Middle East region insecure. As the war rages on, the Islamic Republic regime in Iran has used this war and continued its suppression, with imprisonments and executions across the country.
This war is neither an attack against a “nuclear Iran” nor is it instigated to “protect the world from terrorism”. This war is an attack in preparation for the “New Middle East” plan. It is a plan for “Greater Israel” within the framework of a war-torn and fragmented Middle East. The same states that have carried out the genocide of the Palestinian people, created the bloodshed in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc, are today carrying out this war in the name of “confronting a nuclear Iran”, “defending the Iranian people” and supporting the people’s struggle for liberation from the hands of the Islamic Republic! They pledge “freedom for Iran” while millions of innocent people are paying the price for this war. This war that the United States and Israel have started is a war against the freedom-seeking people of Iran, against humanity, and all its achievements.
This war is not our war. It is not the war of the working class; we have no problem with workers anywhere, nor with their objectives, namely controlling energy resources, strategic trade routes, regional political influence, and the balance of power between imperialist and regional powers.
Trump, Netanyahu, and the warmongers do their utmost to portray the people of Iran as part of this war. In contrast, this war is completely contrary to the goals of the movement for overthrowing the regime in Iran and achieving freedom, equality, security, and prosperity. We do not have a common path with the enemies of the people.
This war must end. The war crimes, such as the destruction of schools, hospitals, and people’s homes, and the negative effects of bombs and missiles on the psychology of our children, must be stopped.
We, as the Committee of Solidarity with the Iranian Workers’ Movement, on May Day, while emphasising solidarity and the united struggle of the working class against the capitalist system, stand alongside freedom-seeking people, the working class, and the radical humanitarian movements of the world, so that the people themselves determine the future of Iran. Furthermore, we are against all reactionary and right-wing forces that advocate for war. On May Day, let us say with a loud voice: No to war, no to militarism, long live international workers’ solidarity.
